The Capacity Building Initiative will help the CDFI Fund achieve its mission by ensuring CDFIs have the capacity to meet the needs in their communities.

The CDFI Fund’s Scaling Up Microfinance series, provided by Opportunity Finance Network (OFN), will expand the capacity of CDFIs that specialize in microfinance through a multifaceted training and technical assistance program. The program will be focused on decreasing costs, building human capital, and improving the business models of participants.

The Scaling Up Microfinance training will emphasize the following three topics:

  • Technology: The training will demonstrate a variety of tools that CDFIs can use to enhance their microfinance products to reduce delivery costs and enhance quality, from prepaid cards and mobile functionality to branchless banking and alternative merchant payment systems. Instruction will focus on best practices and situational problem-solving.

  • Human Capital: The Scaling Up Microfinance series will provide next generation human capital strategies for junior executives, including professional development tools, mentorship, and guidance, in order to develop a grassroots understanding of microfinance principles.

  • Sustainable and Feasible Business Models: The training will incorporate strategies to target cost reductions and improve institutional sustainability. Participants will discuss microfinance business strategy, marketing, pricing, products, policies, and methods of outreach to rural areas.

CDFIs will also have access to a Resource Bank containing research and tools that can be used to further knowledge of microfinance products. Course training materials, third-party expert documents, and other resources will be made available to the public.

The series will include:

  • Training:In-person training will be provided on topics such as technology, human capital, sustainable and feasible business models, and other relevant subjects. Free webinars will also be provided to expand upon these and other topics.

  • Technical Assistance:Technical assistance will be available to CDFIs that participate in the in-person training sessions.

Training and technical assistance opportunities will be made available to certified and emerging CDFIs that specialize in microfinance.
