The Capacity Building Initiative will greatly expand technical assistance and training opportunities for Community Development Financial Institutions (CDFIs) nationwide and significantly boost the ability of CDFIs to deliver financial products and services to underserved communities.
To carry out the Initiative's objectives, the CDFI Fund has engaged established community development firms to provide training and technical assistance. More information can be found in the individual overviews below.
| || Industry-wide training targets key issues currently affecting CDFIs and the communities they serve, including affordable housing and business lending, portfolio management, risk assessment, foreclosure prevention, training in CDFI business processes, and assistance with liquidity and capitalization challenges. The Initiative also offers direct technical assistance and individualized capacity-building plans and focuses on extending CDFI coverage to underserved communities, especially in rural areas. |
Capacity Building Initiative Resource Banks

NeighborWorks America will present the Building Native CDFIs’ Sustainability and Impact series. The series will provide a wide range of specialized training, technical assistance, and peer learning opportunities designed to meet the unique needs of Native CDFIs at all stages of growth.

Opportunity Finance Network will provide the Expanding CDFI Coverage in Underserved Areas series. The series will provide specialized training and technical assistance to certified and emerging CDFIs to extend their reach into certain underserved communities in the United States that currently lack a CDFI presence.

Opportunity Finance Network will provide the Financing Community Health Centers series. The series will build the capacity of CDFIs to successfully finance and provide services to community health centers in underserved communities. In-person and online training will be provided on topics such as health care sector trends, underwriting, program designs for lending to community health centers, and other relevant subjects.

NeighborWorks® America will provide The Leadership Journey II: Continuing Native CDFI Growth and Excellence series. This series builds upon the success of The Leadership Journey I: Native CDFI Growth and Excellence that provided training to sixteen experienced Native CDFIs. The Leadership Journey II will support the continued growth and long-term sustainability of established Native CDFIs by providing the forum, tools, and resources for Native CDFI leaders to identify and address the critical challenges of their organizations. Training, technical assistance, executive coaching, peer mentoring and specialized resources will be available to participants.
